IPL 2022: Two new teams to get “Special Picks” for buying players- Reports

Two new teams are all set to join the Indian Premier League (IPL). This was officially announced in 2020 itself. However, the city or place these two new teams will be representing is yet to be seen. Another question which is yet to be seen is if these two new teams have a good team. As every team already have their base and will be retaining their core players, it gets harder for the new teams to have a good squad. Thus, the BCCI needs to ensure that there are special provisions for these teams. It has now been reported that there will be special picks for them.

This is mostly going to have a “Draft” format which was initially seen in 2016 when Rising Pune Supergiant and Gujrat Lions were new and temporarily replaced the Chennai Super Kings and the Rajasthan Royals. According to a report, BCCI may allow the new teams to buy top players apart from at the auction in order to level the playing field. According to Cricbuzz, the number of ‘special picks’ could range from two to three players but it will be dependent upon the number of retentions the eight existing franchisees will be allowed. These special picks could range from three to four players. However, the final number will be determined based on the number of retentions allowed for the eight current teams.
